Jamestown
Railtown 1897 – Go for a steam train ride (weekends only). Ride on an authentic train from the Sierra Railway, a 45 minute ride through oak trees and grassy hillsides, past a defunct gold mine, through a narrow cut, where a bandit could jump onto the top of the train. Listen to the steam whistle blow and the clanging of the train bell, and feel the slow rocking of the train on the tracks. Saturdays and Sundays, April - Oct., Sat. only in Nov. Tip: Currently the steam locomotive is Saturdays, Sundays the train is pulled by a diesel.
On the roundhouse tour you can find out how a steam train works, and see the workshops where they keep these old trains in working order. Fascinating for the mechanically-minded, but the tour is 50 min. and little kids may get antsy.
There are picnic tables and a grassy area to run around. The gift shop has wide array of train toys and books, train whistles.
