Castlerigg Stone Circle (Keswick) Visit the Castlerigg
Circle, one of the oldest stone circles in England, ca 3000 BC. The rocks
look like Polomoches island in Babar and Zephir and its
just a spectacular setting. You can hike to it from many routes in the
area. |

Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum (Keswick)
People have mined the stone and ore from Cumbria for centuries. Tour the
Threlkeld Quarry where granite was quarried, and find out what it was like
to be a miner in the Underground Mine Experience. In the Mining Musem, the
Geology Room has a table-top relief map of Lake District geology (very cool).
At the gift shop, stock up on mine exploration gear. |

Beatrix Potters Hill Top Farm (Sawrey) Stop by Beatrix Potters 17th century farmhouse where
she lived and wrote her beloved childrens books. She observed and
drew from nature around her. Bring along The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck or Tom Kitten to compare her drawings with the landscape at Hill
Top farm. |

Visit The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness, a well-done exhibit that
recreates her characters in the Lake District surroundings. |

William Wordsworths house(s) (Grasmere) See the landscape that inspired the poet Wordsworth to write poems
such as "I wandered lonely as a cloud." Make an all day excursion
to walk to Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, two houses where
he wrote poetry and lived for many years. |

Lake Windermere Cruises
Take a delightful ride around Lake Windermere on a small steamboat ("steamer").
You can pick them up at Bowness or Ambleside. The trip around the lake provides
great views of the mountains, castles and other landmarks on the shore. |

Aquarium of the Lakes (Newby Bridge)
This freshwater aquarium specializes in exhibits about the Lake District),
including a re-creation of the bottom of Lake Windemere and a water lab
of microscopic life in the lake. |

From
the pier next to the aquarium, take The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway for a steam train excursion to Haverthwaite. |

Cruise Ullswater The Lake District is filled with lovely
lakes, and Ullswater is one of the most beautiful. Take a cruise on a
19th century steamer, now powered by oil. Pick up the boat at Glenridding,
Howtown, or Pooley Bridge. Combine your cruise with a walk along the southern
side of the lake |

Muncaster Castle (Ravenglass) This 13th century caste, built on a Roman foundation, has been owned by the same
family for centuries. Its supposed to be a haunted castle, especially
the Tapestry room, and if you look hard, you might even see some faeries
floating around the garden. The World Owl Trust, located on the
grounds, gives a "Meet the Birds" show daily. |

Steam train (Ravenglass)
Take the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, a pint-size steam train
from Ravenglass through Eskdale. The train was originally designed to carry
ore from Eskdale to the coast. The train also stops at the Muncaster
Mill, a working water mill where you can see flour being ground. |
