Ile Ste Helene - Parc Jean Drapeau
Ile Sainte Helene
A large island in the St. Lawrence River, in 1611 Samuel de Champlain named the island after his wife, Helene. It’s a lovely oasis of trees and grass in summer, and a great place for kids watch the boats go by in the river. The island is easily accessible by the metro (Jean-Drapeau stop) or boat shuttle from Cartier Pier on the waterfront.
Biosphere
Biosphere Environment Museum (Musee de l’environment) – Situated in a large geodesic dome from Expo 67, this outstanding museum is all about water and the St. Lawrence River. Kids of all ages will have fun in Water Wonders hands-on water activities – sink a ship with bubbles, walk on water, build a stable boat for the St. Lawrence, turn the Archimedes screw, and more (kids will get wet). Other exhibits focus on the “great blue highway,” the mighty St. Lawrence River as it flows from the Great Lakes to the ocean. Take the elevator to the fourth floor to the Belvedere, for fabulous views in all direction.
Public swimming pool (Complexe aquatique de Ile Sainte-Helene) – June to August, bring your swim suits and spend the afternoon at this large public pool. Open daily, bring towels.
Next to the aquatic center is a nice playground and picnic tables. Also, good views of the big ships in the river.
Stewart Museum (Musee Stewart) - Currently closed for renovations and reopening May 2010.
Tram ride – In summer, take the little tram that runs around the island. Pick up the tram at the Jean Drapeau metro station.
La Ronde amusement park – Everyone in the family will enjoy twirling and spinning in rides for kids of all ages, along with panoramic views of Montreal from the Ferris wheel, a 19th century antique carousel, and Pitoune, a ride from Expo 67. Little ones will have fun on Monsieur L’Arbe, a flying carousel, Tchou Tchou little train, or floating in a circular raft on, Jouyeux Moussaillon. For bigger kids there’s bumper cards, and Splash, a boat ride ending with a 50 ft drop, creating that wave that leaves you soaked. Thrilling seeking teens will want to go on Monstre, the highest wooden roller coaster in the world, and Goliath, the newest steel coaster, 171 feet high and speeds of 110 mph.
