Around Basel

Riehen – One day we hopped on a tram, and headed out to Riehen (just a short 20 min. ride from the city center). Riehen is out in the country, a charming village with hiking paths and a delightful toy museum (much better than the Spielzug in downtown Basel). Bring a picnic lunch, or stop into one of the excellent restaurants in town.

Toy Museum Riehen (Spielzugmuseum Riehen) – The museum has a fairy tale collection of toys - old-fashioned mechanical trains, fire engines, ships, magical shadow theater, miniature farm and circus with wooden animals and figures, toy villages, traditional dolls and doll houses, kitchens and shops, soldiers and castles. There's also play area with wooden toys, puzzles, games.

Wiese Park (Landschaftspark Wiese) – It's just a five minute walk west of Riehen Dorf tram stop on Erlenstrasschen to a large park area. Stroll on the Wiesenweg paths through the countryside along the river, this is perfect spot for kids to run around, picnic when the weather is nice. Paths are paved, good if you have a stroller. Tip: If kids really need to stretch their legs, the trail sign for the Wiesenweg indicates a trail that goes all the way back into Basel, takes over an hour to the Badischer Bahnhof.
