Lake Brienz (Brienzersee)

Lake cruises – Lake cruises depart from the East train station (Bahnhof) in Interlaken, stopping various villages along the way, to Brienz at the far end of the lake. Cruises take about 1 1/2 hours, 3 hours round trip. In the summer months, enjoy a cruise on the paddle steamer Lotschberg. Here's the schedule.
Iseltwald – A charming little town on the south side of the lake, Iseltwald is a fun day trip from Interlaken. Take the PostBus, have a fresh fish lunch, kids can play the charming playground (swings, slides, bouncy things) next to the PostBus stop, then take a walk along the lake. Follow the sign east that says "Wanderweg" (there's a map at the PostBus stop), and follow the paved promenade along the lake, a scenic walk. On the return trip, pick up the boat and cruise back to the East train station in Interlaken.
Hike the Woodcarving Trail ("Schnitzlerweg") from Axlap Sporthotel up to the lake of Hintersburgseeli (takes about 1 1/2 hours). Along the way are trees carved into figures by Brienz craftsmen - figures of a child, a hunter, a fisherman, children listening to an echo, a woman collecting mushrooms.

Go boating – Rent pedal boats or row boats, and get out on the lake.  Boat rentals are available on Seestrasse, at the lake.

Brienz Rothorn steam train (Brienz Rothorn Bahn) – Take a one hour ride in a steam cog railway, puffing up the steep hillside from the town, chugging through green alpine meadows to the summit, Brienz Rothorn. Panoramic views of the Alps, including the Jungfrau in the distance. Tip: There's one stop midway at Planalp, where you can get off – the perfect place to picnic or take a short hike. Click here for the details.

Watch wood carvers at work – At the Jobin workshop, in business since 1835, watch wood carvers at work. There's also a museum with a collection of antique music boxes, as well as new wood sculptures.

Ballenberg Open-Air Museum (Ballenberg, near Brienz) – Ballenberg is a living history museum, where kids can experience rural life in Switzerland. Watch demonstrations of traditional clock making, carding wool, lace making, wood carving, hat making, blacksmithing, and ride in horse-drawn carriages. Visit a chalet with regional costumes and period furniture, as well as buildings typical of different regions of Switzerland. Also, there's an old fashioned carousel, playground, house with traditional toys and games, chocolate factory, horse-carriage rides, and petting zoo with piglets and baby rabbits. Ballenberg is open April to October.
