Southwest Utah

Sandstone rocks

Southwest Utah is one of our favorite areas to travel on a drive trip – weird and wonderful hoodoos, slot canyons, sparkling year round creeks, strawberry pink and cream white cliffs, night skies filled with bright stars.  No big cities here, but the national parks are awe inspiring and each one is unique. The high desert seems timeless; however, the landscape is a result of geologic changes than span hundreds of millions of years, and kids can see the amazing results.

The scenery of the Bryce and Zion (and the Grand Canyon) is so spectacular you'll want time time to enjoy it, and traveling with local guides is a big help. Take a tour just for families that combines fossil hunting and tubing on the river, with a guided walk through the Zion Narrows and cowboy cookout:

Gorgeous photographs and poetry capture the seasons of wind and rain, and amazing shapes, colors and textures of  sandstone – winding canyons, spires, hoodoos, caves, arches – everything you'll see in southwest Utah.  This is a gem! (Picture book)
