Kluane National Park

Kluane National Park

Kluane National Park, easily accessible from the Alaska Highway, covers a large area, with glaciers, lakes, and includes Mount Logan, the tallest mountain in Canada, 19,545 ft. and Kluane Lake, the largest lake in the Yukon. When the weather is good, the scenery is spectacular.

Haines Junction Visitor Centre – Stop into the visitor Centre in Haines Junction to get information about the park, and maps.  Go out for a short hike on the Dezadeash River Trail - the trail follows the river and is easy for younger kids.Click here for the details.

Kathleen Lake – If you're looking for a place to picnic, Kathleen Lake (just south of Haines Junction) has day use area with picnic tables, including a covered area if the weather is bad. Kids can skip stones on the lake (the beach has lots of them).

Tachal Dhal Visitor Centre (Sheep Mountain) – The Dall sheep (pure white with those long curling horns) live in the mountains in this area. At the visitor center, there are touch tables with heavy sheep horns and telescopes are set up to spot sheep on the steep cliffs. Dall sheep are best seen in spring and fall; in summer the sheep migrate to higher pastures.

Kluane Museum of Natural History (Burwash Landing) – This homey little museum is a gem, where you'll find out about the Southern Tutchone people who live in the park, and see full size dioramas of Yukon wildlife.
