Shasta Cascade

Shasta Cascade, the northeast region of California, is a less well-known part of the state, but it's well worth getting off Interstate 5 to explore the hidden treasures of this area. When we were kids, our favorite was Lassen Volcanic National Park, and it still is with our family – red cinder cones, dormant volcanoes, blurping mud pots, emerald green lakes, and snow balls in summer.

Railroad Park Resort (Dunsmuir) - Where else can kids sleep in a caboose?  In 1968 the Murphy family assembled a collection of railroad passenger cars, locomotives, flat cars, and renovated the cabooses as motel units. The resort has a swimming pool, dining car restaurant, playground, fun for all the railroad fans in your family.

Tip: The resort is accessible by train from San Francisco.  You can take the Amtrak train and get off at Dunsmuir stop.

Mount Shasta City – Driving long distances on Interstate 5, looking for a great place for picnic lunch, or hotel to stay overnight? This town is a fun stop.

Mount Shasta City Park is a large grassy area with picnic tables, playground, restrooms, bubbling creek, and hiking trails through the woods.
Supermarket in town has everything you need for a picnic – sandwiches, salads, lunch packs.
