Archeological sites (Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapa and La Democracia)
One of the oldest civilizations in Central America lived in
this area, more than 2000 years ago. Huge stone heads have been uncovered
in the sugar cane fields. In the town of La Democracia, the stone sculptures
are in the town plaza and museum. Many of the pieces are still where they
were found, some half buried. To see them, take a taxi ride from Santa
Lucia Cotzumalguapa to Bilbao, Finca El Baul, and Finca La Ilusiones. |
