Northeast Nevada

Wooden wagon

Northeastern Nevada is not that populated, and wooden buildings are well preserved in the desert dryness – here kids can get a feeling for the frontier experience. Pioneers on their way to California passed through this territory, and Pony Express riders swapped their horses at way stations along the way. It's also cowboy country with working ranches in operation since the 19th century, and the oldest rodeo in Nevada, the Silver State Stampede.

Ben lives with his family on a cattle ranch in northern Nevada, but nothing seems to go right. When a horse gets loose and breaks a leg, Ben’s in hot water with the mean old cow boss, but on a snowy day out in the mountains, Ben saves the guy’s life. Wonderful local color, inspired by kids who ride and rope today. (Chapter book)

Find out about ranch and cowboy lore, with plenty of activities to try – design your own brand, recipes for buckaroo beans and homemade root beer, make your own chaps and spurs, cowboy roping, barrel races, and more.  (Activity book)
