KwaZulu- Natal

Drakensburg Mountains
The province of KwaZulu-Natal, with high mountain peaks to the west and tropical beaches to the east, includes the homeland of the Zulu people. The name Natal was given by Vasco da Gama when he sighted the coast on Christmas Day –"natal" is the word for Christmas in Portuguese.

Drakensberg Mountains – This area covers a large expanse of mountain wilderness, with the highest mountains in South Africa and the second highest waterfall in the world.

Royal Natal Park nature reserve has clear mountain streams, spectacular waterfalls, horseback riding and miles of hiking trails. At Thendele Camp, stay in self-catering cottages, right at the foot of the majestic Amphitheatre rock cliffs.

Another nature reserve, highly recommended by a local South African family, is uKahlamba Drakensberg Park. Here are towering sandstone cliffs and San (Bushman) rock art. At Kamberg Rock Art Centre, take a guided walk to the Game Pass Shelter to view extraordinary cave paintings.
