Granada - Albaicin & Sacromonte

The Albaicin – El Albaicin is the old Moorish neighborhood of Granada. Situated on a steep hillside, it's a maze of cobblestone stairs and streets, lined with whitewashed houses.

The easiest way to explore the Albaicin is to take the little red and white mini-buses (31, 32, 34). Pick up the buses on Gran Via or Plaza Nueva, and ride up throughthe narrow streets (just wide enough for the bus to get through). Get off the bus at the Mirador de San Nicolas, an open plaza with stunning views of the Alhambra across the valley. Along with admiring the views, stop into the cafe for snacks. From the Mirador, just meander your way back down to the Plaza Nueva or Gran Via, the kids will find it fun to decide which way to go.

Walk along the Darro River – The Darro River originally was the source of water for the Alhambra; today it's just fun to walk along the river as it flows through the valley between the Alhambra and Albaicin. Start at the Plaza Nueva and walk up to Carrera del Darro, continuing on to the Paseo de los Triestes. Here there's a lovely wide terrace along the river, with several cafes under shaded arbors where you can get cold drinks (orange, papaya, mango etc.). If you don't want to walk back down, just pick up one of the mini-buses which will eventually drop you back where you started.

Museo Cuevos del Sacromonte In the late 19th century, whole communities lived here in caves, dug into the steep hills. Visit this open air museo to see ten different caves and traditional life. Kids can imagine living in a cave house with bedroom at the back, living room in the middle, kitchen in front (complete with fireplace, table and chairs, metal cookware, and ceramic jugs), another cave for the stables with horses and donkeys, or weaving, metalworking and pottery. And find out about legends of lost treasure in the hills.
