Whitehorse - Outside Town

Yukon Wildlife Preserve –The Yukon Wildlife Preserve is a must see - kids can view wildlife of the Yukon up close in their natural habitats of forests, rocky cliffs and wetlands. On the 1 1/2 hour bus ride around preserve, the knowledgeable guide stops at each enclosure where you'll see elk, lynx, mountain goats, arctic foxes, stone sheep, caribou, bison, musk ox and moose. Open year round.

Takhini Hot Springs – Soak in the hot springs, two big connecting pools like a big warm swimming pool (no sulfery smells). Tip: Bring your flip-flops so you aren't wandering around in bare feet around the hot springs. Also there are trail rides, and pony rides for little ones, and an outdoor climbing wall.

Copperbelt Railway & Mining Museum – Younger kids will enjoy the narrow gauge train ride through the forest (train ride is free). Children's play area, and picnic tables.

Yukon River cruise – South of town, go for a two hour boat cruise through Miles Canyon and Schwatka Lake. Once the site of the dangerous "white horse" rapids, the lake (with a hydroelectric dam) has smoothed out the rapids, but it's still an impressive landscape. Cruises run May to September.

Fish ladder – On the east side of the river, accessible from Chadburn Lake Road is a wooden fish ladder for the salmon. The fish ladder lets the migrating salmon go around the dam, to return to their birthplace in a stream.  The time to see Chinook salmon going through the fish ladder is August.
