Zihuatanejo - Ixtapa

Child riding horses on Zihuatanejo beach
Zihuatanjeo is situated on a lovely bay with sparkling aquamarine waters, ringed by soft white sand beaches and palm trees, pelicans bobbing in the ocean. One parent describes it as “a great place to lie around and do nothing.” The town of Zihuatanejo is low-key and very friendly, with a Mexican flavor. Ixtapa, a bigger town up the coast, has resort amenities and an island for kids to explore.
    Zihuatanejo -
Beaches – These are four beaches along the bay, all great for families, where kids can build sand castles or run along the beach to their heart’s content. At Playa la Ropa, rent boogie boards and hit the waves.
SnorkelingPlaya las Gatas is the place to snorkel, a coral reef and lots of colorful fishes. It’s a ten minute ride by boat out to the Playa las Gatas (pick up the boats at the pier in the center of town).
Mercado Central – The central market is fun to explore, tropical fruits, vegetables, seafood and fresh fish of all kinds for sale, everything you need for a picnic, handicrafts shops with clothes, hats, shoes and woven sandals, watch artisans making jewelry.
Boat rides – In the bay, there are boats of all sizes, from row boats and fishing boats to luxury yachts. A ride to the coral reef or around the bay is fun for everyone in the family. Choose from bright yellow banana boats (especially fun for kids), kayaks, catamarans, glass bottom boats (pick up boats at the pier), sailboats.
Horse rides on the beach (Playa Larga) - A short distance from Zihuatanejo, at Playa Larga rent horses and go for a ride on the beach. One family reports that the horses were gentle and slow, their daughter had a great time galloping up and down the beach
    Ixtapa –
Parque Aventura – Kids love to ride the zip lines in the forest, it feels like you’re flying. Put on a hard hat and gloves, strap on a harness, the harness is clipped to a pulley, step off the platform and there you are, zipping along on a cable. Kids love the sensation of zooming through the trees, and even little kids can do it (ages four and up).
Isla Ixtapa – It’s always fun to explore an island. Isla Ixtapa has beaches and snorkeling (Playa Coral), lots of colorful fish, and if you’re lucky, you might see dolphins too. To get to Isla Ixtapa, pick up the water taxis at Playa Linda, the pier at Zihuatenejo or arrange for a day trip at your hotel.
