Beaumaris Castle (Beaumaris) – Beaumaris Castle
(a World Heritage Site) was the last of the eight castles built by Edward
I in his "iron ring of castles," intended to keep his English thumbs on
the rebellious Welsh. The castle, surrounded by a wide moat, was designed
so that invaders would have a tough time getting in. The outer wall alone
has 16 towers and two gates. Across from the castle, have picnic lunch outdoors,
and kids can watch the swans and ducks paddling about on the moat. |

in Beaumaris, visit the Beaumaris Gaol and Courthouse to see how
prisoners (including children) fared in the 17th century. It was no picnic.
On a more peaceful note, visit the Museum of Childhood in Castle
Street to see what Victorian children used for toys, games and furniture. |

Anglesey Sea Zoo (Brysiencyn, across the river from Caernarfon) – This zoo specializes in marine life found off the North Wales coast.
Don't miss the sea horse garden or lobster nursery, where baby lobsters
are reared by hand. A unique exhibit is the shipwreck room, where kids can
see conger eels gliding through the wreck of the IV Sisters. |

Isle of Anglesey Beaches – Anglesey has some wonderful
long sandy beaches and rockpools to explore. Benllech, Cable Bay (north
of Aberffraw), and Rhosneigr are popular for families. At Holyhead,
visit the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) South Stack
Cliffs reserve. From the Ellin's Tower Visitor Centre, you'll get a
spectacular view of puffins and razorbills, and there are live cameras to
see birds nesting on the cliffs. |
