Around Calgary - South

Bar U Ranch – Established in 1882, the Bar U Ranch was famous for breeding cattle and Percheron horses. Today it's still run as a ranch, a "living museum," where you can take an interpretive tour and then your cowpokes can have a real old fashioned "ranch hands" meal (how about a buffalo burger?) At the Visitor Centre, buy "period" things, such as preserves, woodwork, handmade soap and candles.
During the year the ranch hosts events that include cattle round-ups, roping, and penning.
Heritage Park – Heritage Park is a living history museum, where kids can experience life on the Canadian prairies. Ride on a steam train, hop on a horse-drawn wagon, cruise around the lake on a paddlewheeler, play old-fashioned carnival games, sample old-fashioned candies and fresh baked cinnamon buns. There’s 90+ historic buildings – a trading fort, tipis, miner’s cabin, school, bank, general store, ranch house, and more. Heritage Park is open from May to September, and on weekends until mid-October. It’s also open for special events year round, click here for details.
Spruce Meadows – Spruce Meadows plays host to five international show jumping competitions each year from June to September. The grounds are home to stables full of horses and are open year-round. It is free to enter except during tournaments when special pricing is in effect. There’s lots more going on year-round, including a six-day Christmas market in November featuring more than 200 vendors, festive entertainment and ice-carving demonstrations.
