Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area – From Reedsport, follow Hwy 42 east to the Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area to look for big brown Roosevelt elk. Elk are the largest land animal in Oregon, and this area has a herd of about 120. Displays in the interpretive center have fun facts about elk.
When we visited mid-day in summer, the elk weren't visible (they were relaxing in the forest on the far side of the meadow). Go early in the morning or at dusk for best viewing, bring binoculars.
Umpqua Discovery Center – When the weather is gray and misty, head to the Umpqua Discovery Center for hands on exhibits about Indians, pioneers and early explorers. Check out a fish cannery and experience the natural history of estuaries, forests, meadows and dunes.
Oregon Dunes Visitor Center – Stop into the visitor center to learn about how the sand dunes are formed, and see a model of the dunes recreation area. |
